Understand the Power of Patriotic Spending

232 years ago, the Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Continental Congress. Although it was not completed until August, the date of July 4, 1776 is the celebrated anniversary of our split from Britain’s rule.
Parades, fireworks, patriotic speeches, cannon and gunfire celebrations as well as family picnics and outings are traditional ways that Americans remember their freedom.

To many, the true meaning of this holiday is forgotten as we worry about kicking off the Summer season with a barbecue, or who will win the Indy 500.
Lost in the overwhelming flood of sales ads, what to wear, where to go, and concern over the cost of fuel to get there as we drive to see the in-laws.
Our founding principle is Made in the USA, and as such, we must give sacred respect for the real reason that we have a day set aside to remember those who gave it all, and the families left behind.

It was formerly known as Decoration Day; and for many years observed on May 30, regardless of the day of the week. Another tradition is to fly the U.S. flag at half-staff from dawn until noon local time.
Every other day we exist in this country that we call home is a true holiday because of the lives given in the line of duty.

…and not because its owners were ready to retire.
The Stinehour Press of Vermont opted to close since they are unable to afford the costs of upgrading their equipment to stay competitive in the industry.
Competing with overseas printers is difficult, and without the income from new business, over fifty years of dedication to an exceptional product is now lost, as well as the jobs.
It may seem a small loss to some, but these are adding up, amounting to a gargantuan loss nationwide.
Stinehour had a reputation for the highest quality, a commitment to their company and its employees.
The current owners purchased the business back from an Irish corporation (who purchased it from the original family-owned operation that it was, in 1998).
Managing director and CEO Warren Bingham had this to say in the company’s press release, and it applies to almost every business struggling to keep afloat in these tough times:
“The lines separating author, publisher, printer and distributor are blurring, and digital technology can make China or Reykjavik seem as close as Lunenburg,” Bingham said.
“A new kind of book printing industry is evolving that is based on printing shorter runs of more titles including digital print-on-demand.
This should bode well for Stinehour Press and our unique blend of art, craft and technology; but it arrives at the same time as we often see books projects from China for less than we can buy the paper.
These are not good times for American manufacturers. I hope we know the full cost of what we’re buying as a society. When lowest cost is always the determining factor, it might be higher than we think.”

True that! We at NW Limited are sorry to see them succumb.

If April Fool’s day was a day to facetiously suggest that our very exclusive, limited, custom and handmade products were to be mass-produced in China (for those that know, this is the ultimate in sarcasm), then today, April 4th, we will declare our red, white, and blue roots, our undying devotion to maintaining a business and product which has its roots firmly here in American soil.

Every component of our History in Vogue^TM product line (with rare exception), is produced here in America, is American-made (by just one American person), and those carefully-selected items are most usually the product of another small, often very local business. 
One of the founding concepts of NW Limited (formerly NW Columbia Map Company), is in fact, “American-made”, and we have never forgotten that. 
Every box bears its Made in USA stamp; each framed, matted and handmade bit of history has a sticker proclaiming the same, and they are placed there with pride.
Much of our original line is a celebration and in honor of this great nation’s history, beginning with the Lewis & Clark Maps, continuing through the 2007 quadirecentennial Jamestown, Virginia Map, and our newest, Dead Reckoning of the Pacific Graveyard, which pays tribute to those that lost their lives exploring, supplying and surviving the maritime industry from the earliest years of this nation to the most recent.
The maps and charts form the core of our company, and it is what it means to be “History in Vogue” to celebrate these historic events and pay tribute to them in a way that gives them new and current life.
