Planning a news conference today, July 8, 2009, Meriwether Lewis’ descendants (save one), numbering nearly 200, have also set up awebsite to try and further the cause for exhumation of the famous explorer’s remains. The purpose being merely to determine more accurately the manner of his death.
Governor Lewis is buried on the Natchez Trace Parkway which is federally-protected land.
Arguments of murder vs. suicide have been raging in certain circles since the first exhumation of his remains.
On October 11, 1809, Lewis was found deceased at age 35, in a small inn named Grinder’s Stand in the Tennessee mountains.
While the park service would rather keep the body in its sanctified resting place, the family would like scientific evidence to lay to rest the arguments at long last, and then to give the intrepid Lewis a proper Christian burial.
